Whale watching adventure from Tromsø (Tromso)

A dream come true What an absolute epic trip, to be able to watch whales in the wild (not captive in sea world) and with a great small crew with the knowledge and respect for the wilderness. The trip is fairly straightforward: you get into the boat they will sail into the Fjords where there's a higher chance to watch whales (about 1-2 hour sailing). Once there, the crew try to spot the whales from afar, sail towards them keeping a respectful distance from the whales to not scare or disturb them (we are the visitors).

The crew is composed by only 2: Hannalena and the captain. It's also focused on very small groups, which makes it very personalised and relaxed. You also notice this is very different than the other money-driven tours out there. They want you to have a great experience with the whales, sharing knowledge facts and explaining that we are there to watch and respect the animals as much as possible. This is a must for me personally: we are here to respect nature!

I did the trip twice because of the amazing experience, and I hope you do it to. Trust me, it's worth it. Every time you watch a whale jump, dive, or just show their fins, you will experience absolute joy. Bring good clothes for the weather, since you will be watching whales from the deck of the boat. And once you feel you have seen enough, get inside the cabin and grab a coffee, hot chocolate, cookies, or a hot soup the crew has prepared for you!

It was absolutely beautiful. For the first time in our lives, we saw whales – including orcas.
We started the tour at 08:15 AM and returned around 4:00 PM. The weather was fantastic and the scenery was breathtaking: snow-covered fjords, stunning nature, and incredible light.

Yes, it was freezing cold, but that only made the experience even more special. We were able to watch the orcas for almost two hours, which was truly magical.

The Njord Adventures team was incredibly friendly, professional, and welcoming. We felt well taken care of throughout the entire trip.

We would definitely book another tour with them and can highly recommend Njord Adventures!

Unbedingt empfehlenswerte Tour, die Reiseleiterin war toll. Wir haben viele Wale gesehen und sind noch etwas länger geblieben als die anderen Touren. So konnten wir noch Buckelwale sehen.Es gab heiße Getränke und Kekse und eine leichte Suppe. Allerdings hatte ich mir da nicht unbedingt eine Tütensuppe vorgestellt.

Fabulous experience! I was lucky enough to win this tour. Communication, friendliness and the tour itself was good. Although its a small boat tour, we were taken in a big boat to increase chances of seeing them, being end of season. We did see a few including orcas.

Amazing experience. Today's experience was incredible. Not only did we see multiple orca but we got to see two humpback whales and the Northern lights on the ride back in. Words can not explain how great this trip was. The knowledge of the local guide Hannaleena was fantastic and the boat skipper Daniel did a great job of getting us close to the whales and keeping them safe.

La nave era dotata di tutti i comfort necessari (bagno, sedute comode, tavolini e spazio esterno) con un massimo di 36 persone, che penso sia un plus rispetto alle navi da 200 persone. La guida e il capitano sono stati eccezionali: ci hanno spiegato molto bene tutte le fasi dell'attività, lasciando spazio a domande/chiarimenti e soprattutto ci hanno fatto godere ogni singolo momento, rispettando anche il silenzio in alcuni momenti cruciali. Sono stati molto rispettosi dell'ambiente e degli animali marittimi incontrati, cercando di non interferire nelle loro attività, ma facendoci comunque avvicinare abbastanza da creare un momento bellissimo.
Alla fine dell'attività ci son state spiegate le diverse specie incontrate, con tanto di immagini e cartoline ricordo.
Consigliatissimo, attività locale da sostenere assolutamente!

It was really great to be out with a group of friends and to be with such a responsible company.
I am also in the business of Whale watching and it was really great to share experience's with Jørn and Hannaleena who are excellent at their job.
We found plenty of Whales Orcas, Humpbacks and Fin and even a young Minke too.
There is plenty of comfort aboard the very capable SYLVKALLEN hot drinks avaible at any time and Soup after an exhilarating time with the whales on the way home.
Certainly i am planning to return next year.

The best compromise in therms of comfort and speed, plus an amazing guide! The trip with Njord Adventures was unforgettable! I’ve done the whales tour before with other boats and, in my opinion, theirs have a good compromise with size, speed and comfort. It’s only 2h30 to reach the fjords where the whales are, which allowed us to stay much more time around there to try to spot them. We spend a long time enjoying Orcas and Hampacks and got a beautiful gift in the end with a curious Orca playing sooo close to the boat. And that was thankful to them that pushed a bit longer as the weather was good and they could spot more animals around. We had a safe trip, they respect the animals, their space, the distance. We had hot drinks and snacks available the whole time and soup on the way back. Jørn sailed us very safely and also safe for the whales. Hannaleena was super kind, full of knowledge and very passionate. She was all the time checking the fjords to try to spot them. We had explanations about the weather conditions, what to expect and all the details of the whales we’ve seen and their behavior. We were even more lucky to get crazy Northern Lights on the way back, as the weather was completely clear. I totally recommend them! Happy birthday Hannaleena !

Nach zahlreichen erfolglosen Whale Watching Tours in allen Ländern hat mir Njord Adventures endlich meinen Traum erfüllt Orcas in freier Wildbahn hautnah zu erleben. Die Tour war mit Abstand die Beste, die ich bisher erlebt habe. Die Crew hat uns mit sehr viel Rücksicht & genügend Abstand zu den Tieren einen magischen Tag geschenkt. Wir haben super viele Orcas und Buckelwale gesehen. Das Boot ist sehr komfortabel. Für heiße Getränke, eine saubere Toilette an Board ist gesorgt. Was mir besonders gut gefallen hat, ist das wir uns sehr lange bei den Tieren aufgehalten haben. Der Kapitän hat uns immer wieder Richtung der Wale gebracht, ohne zu aufdringlich zu den Tieren zu sein. Ich kann diese Tour zu 1000% empfehlen und bin froh, dass ich mich für diesen kleineren Anbieter entschieden habe. Es waren nur ca 30 Menschen. Jeder hatte einen bequemen Platz und auch beim Fotografieren und Filmen hatten wir alle genug Platz, um etwas zu sehen. Tausend Dank an Njord Adventures!

I had the pleasure of sharing this experience with friends and family, most of whom had never seen orcas before so it was very moving to see their reactions. What an absolutely fantastic company! Our whale and orca sightseeing tour in Tromsø was nothing short of unbelievable. From start to finish, everything was perfectly organized, warm, and personal. The two captains, who also acted as our guides, were truly wonderful—knowledgeable, passionate, and genuinely excited to share their love for the ocean and its wildlife.

We went out on a small boat, which made the whole experience so much more intimate and special. We were incredibly lucky to see both orcas and whales up close, and it was absolutely breathtaking. The tour took a bit longer than planned, but every single minute was worth it—the owners’ total involvement and care for every guest really showed.

A few tips for anyone planning this adventure: dress very warmly, even in multiple layers, as it gets freezing out on the water. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take seasick medicine in advance, and be prepared—the waters can get quite rough at times.

Wow! I can't think of a better way to describe the adventure we had with Njord Adventures in Tromsø last Saturday. The experience we booked was even better than expected. We had the opportunity to watch the whales up close, and we were given lots of information. The whole crew was fantastic — so kind, and always pointing out where the orcas were coming from. I would definitely recommend booking a whale-watching tour here, and if we ever come back, this is the tour we want to take again.

Gestern waren wir mit Njord Adventures auf Whalewatching Tour. Es ist absolut empfehlenswert. Auf dem Weg hin gibt es einen kleinen Vortrag über die Wale die man sehen könnte. Wir waren eines der ersten Boote bei den Walen und man merkt den Guides ihre Liebe zu den Tieren wirklich an. Alle haben die Zeit vergessen und wir waren bis es zu dunkel wurde um etwas zu sehen im Fjord. Es wurde sehr respektvoll mit den Walen umgegangen. Andere Boote sind nahezu in die Wale reingefahren, bei uns kamen die Wale von selbst sehr nah ans Boot. Hannaleena und ihre Crew waren sehr hilfsbereit und immer sehr sehr freundlich. Sie haben sich gegen das Arbeiten in einem Unternehmen entschieden, das gegen die ethischen Grundsätze der Welt der Wale arbeitet und sich selbstständig gemacht. Auf dem Rückweg gab es Suppe und Hannaleena hat nochmals erklärt, welche Wale wir gesehen haben. In unserem Fall Finnwale, Orcas und Buckelwale. Das Team hilft auch bei der Wal Research und beobachtet genau, welche Wale im Fjord auftauchen. We spent the day searching for the Orcas. We were lucky as they made an appearance. We also got to see humpback whales. The trip was well organised and comfortable. Slightly bumpy in places so I'd recommend taking sea sickness tablets if you're prone to that. The guide had a good knowledge and there was a general feeling of respect for nature and the whales. I would highly recommend.

Our first 9-hour expedition was with a different larger boat company and we didn’t see any whales… literally 0 and the whole thing felt rushed and cramped.

But this company, Njord Adventures, are amazing! We went on a smaller, more comfortable, and intimate boat and we were rewarded with numerous orcas (killer whales) and humpback whales. They even gave us soup towards the end of the trip to warm us up!

The water can get choppy, so take seasickness tablets before boarding. The staff keep you informed about bumps and waves, and they were absolutely incredible!

Special shout out to Hannaleena - she was amazing.

Had the most incredible day, I would reccomend this tour to anyone and everyone. After a failed tour with another company this tour exceeeded my expectations. We saw orcas, finn, and humpback whales it was truly sensational. Every direction you looked there were whales as far as the eye could see. We never felt rushed and spent hours watching them splash around. We had a fabulous time with the team at Njord Adventures. Pro-Tip: BRING ANTI-NAUSEA meds. The seas are rough and it's a 3-4 hour journey before you reach where the whales are located. The whales are fantastic and worth putting up with the other sea sick travelers!

Hannaleena and her team make the whale safari a truly amazing experience. They have a small, excellent, and very fast boat that allows them to reach more remote bays, ensuring whale sightings. They are incredibly friendly, helpful, informative, and don’t watch the clock - they genuinely want the best for their customers. During our tour, they went over an hour past the scheduled time because a whale family followed us in the fjord and we had incredible moments.

I was on board the MS Sylvkallen on Saturday, November 15, 2025, and again on November 18, 2025.
Hannalena, our tour guide, and Jørn, our captain, were fantastic.
They both radiated such calm and serenity. They are attentive to their guests on board and always have time for a chat. The boat is small, which makes these trips more personal and intimate.
I always felt safe and very comfortable.
There is also free tea and coffee, as well as hot soup on the return trip. This is great when you're frozen after whale watching.
On my last tour on November 18, 2025, I encouraged two people to join me on this trip. They booked spontaneously on my recommendation and were totally overwhelmed by how beautiful and eventful this tour was. They were Ray from the USA, Sam from Perth, Gucci from England, and me as their “Lucky Roland.” We had such a great time on board!!!
Of course, we also saw lots of orcas, humpback whales, and even fin whales.
All this because Hannalena and Jørn always took us to the right spots. I already know Daniel from my vacations in 2022 and 2023.
Back then, I was also traveling with the crew of the MS Sylvkallen.
